Spooky Season is right around the corner and what better way to start than with a recommended TBR! I haven't read all of these, and some of them I've only read a bit of, but they've been included because they fit the vibe. From cosy, magical found families to chilling thrillers...we have something for everyone.

  • These Witches Don't Burn by Isabel Sterling

Summary - Hannah's a witch, but not the kind you're thinking of. She's the real deal, an Elemental with the power to control fire, earth, water, and air. But even though she lives in Salem, Massachusetts, her magic is a secret she has to keep to herself. If she's ever caught using it in front of a Reg, she could lose it. For good. So, Hannah spends most of her time avoiding her ex-girlfriend (and fellow Elemental Witch) Veronica, hanging out with her best friend, and working at the Fly by Night Cauldron selling candles and crystals to tourists, goths, and local Wiccans.

Elsie was popular – until recently. Now she’s on the outcast’s table too... and she doesn’t want to talk about it. Then there's the new boy, Pax, who won't leave Sal alone. His idea of a good time is hanging out in graveyards. And, for some reason, Sal just can’t stay away.

  • The Girl with the Crystal Eyes by Barbara Baraldi

Summary - A beautiful killer, a cop determined to unravel an enigmatic trail of bloody butchery, a young medium fleeing her past, troubled dreams of murder. A perverse game of life and death unfolds between the hunter and the hunted, murderer and detective, night and day, where the female of the species proves as daringly evil as Hannibal Lecter, giving 'Femme Fatale' a whole new meaning.

  • The Brides of Rollrock Island by Margo Lanagan

Summary - Rollrock is an isolated, windswept island; a wild and salty landscape where fishermen and their families must wring a living from the stormy seas. But Rollrock is also a place of eerie magic, and of powerful desire.

Down on the beach, the outcast witch of Rollrock casts her spells and draws mysterious girls from the sea. These are girls with long, pale limbs and faces of haunting innocence - the most enchantingly beautiful creatures the fishermen of Rollrock have ever seen.

The island is envied, and many a man is lured to Rollrock with the promise of a sea wife. But the arrival of these women is the ruin of countless families - and to the despair of the men of Rollrock, magic always has its price. The brides do not belong on land. One day, the sea will claim them back.

  • Friend Request by Laura Marshall

Summary - Maria Weston wants to be friends with me.

Maybe that had been the problem all along: Maria Weston had wanted to be friends with me, but I let her down.

She's been hovering at the edge of my consciousness for all of my adult life, although I've been good at keeping her out, just a blurred shadow in the corner of my eye, almost but not quite out of sight.

Maria Weston wants to be friends.

But Maria Weston has been dead for more than twenty-five years.
