I read this book quite a while ago, but I can still remember many of the intricate details. I would recall some, but that would give too much away.
Fantasy is by far one of my favourite genres when it comes to books, and I'd say this book falls under that category in a way. The way the events in the book all come together is just so intriguing and exciting that you don't want it to end.
It's safe to say that by the middle of the book - and definitely by the end - Mare and Cal were my forever favourite fictional couple...even though they're not technically a couple yet. I haven't finished reading the second book or even bought the third yet, so I don't know what happens. And even if it did, I couldn't say because...SPOILERS! And we can't be having those thrown around.
Anyway. I think this book is beautifully written. The language and the structure all help tell the story together. As I've said before, it is so very important that you can visualize what's happening in the story as you're reading it and this is another one of those books that do that. The imagery is so strong and detailed that it just draws you in completely. There's no escaping the sympathy for the Reds or the anger for the Silvers.
I try to make it a habit to talk about various aspects of the story, so I'm going to go into more detail about my opinion of the characters. The temperament and personality of each character are made very clear. Not through description, but through the way they talk, behave, and react to certain things. It all builds them and builds your judgement of them. Although...where I liked Maven, to begin with, I very quickly stopped liking him towards the end. You'll find out why if you read the book. Mare is a tricky character because I found it quite hard to try and work out what she might be thinking at particular times, but maybe that's why I like her so much. I see parts of her in myself and I think that's why I build that reader/character relationship with her more than any of the others.
To conclude, I gave this book a 5/5 and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone aged 15-19 (or even older) who's into dystopian novels and a bit of romance because the love triangle within the novel is very easy to get into.
